About Us

The Youth Protection Council is one agency that does so much.  We are the lead shelter provider for runaway and homeless youth and young headed families in Saginaw County, provide rapid re-housing case management and rental assistance as part of our homeless services continuum of care for, and promote health and wellness for school age youth as part of our substance abuse prevention services.

We are also the designated Youth Tobacco Act compliance entity for Saginaw County, which includes retailer education and testing compliance with the Youth Tobacco Act using youth decoys that are trained and supervised by staff. Annually we provided over 7,000 days of shelter care and housing for homeless youth and teen parents. We provide substance abuse prevention services for over 600 school age youth and provide tobacco and alcohol vendor education for over 200 retailers annually.

Welcome from the President
Welcome from the President

Oftentimes when we think about homelessness, we picture tents under a bridge, tattered clothing, and disheveled appearances. However, the reality is that homelessness impacts those we least expect it to; the star football player with a promising future in the NFL, the fashionista who makes honor roll every semester, and the charismatic class clown. According to a study conducted by youth.gov in 2021, as many as 4.2 million United States youth (1 in 10, aged 18-35 and 1 in 30, aged 13-17) experience some degree of homelessness each year.

The Youth Protection Council has been working tirelessly to provide emergency and transitional housing, parenting and substance use prevention education, and supportive services to young people and their families since 1962. Our dedicated Board of Directors ensures sound practices, accountability, transparency, and impact. They, along with our committed team, choose to serve because they care about the future of children in the communities we serve. There is nothing better than knowing that what we do makes a tangible difference in the lives of our most vulnerable.

Please take some time to explore our website, contact us for more information, and discover how you can partner with us to save lives and create futures. Thank you in advance for helping us alleviate youth substance use and housing insecurity in the Great Lakes Bay Region.

Better Together,
